Very early chromolithograph color print of the famous 1881 painting by Robert Gibb, “The Thin Red Line”, approx. 14” x 26” image size in original period frame, matted, overall size approx. 23” x 36”. Robert Gibb (RSA; Oct. 28, 1845-Feb. 11,1932) was a Scottish painter who was Keeper of the national Gallery of Scotland from 1895 to 1907 and Painter and Limner to the King from 1908 until his death. “The Thin Red Line” was inspired by Gibb’s reading of Alexander Kinglake’s book TheInvasion of the Crimea and the painting’s success led to his full membership in the Royal Scottish Academy in 1881. The original is displayed in the Scottish National War Museum in Edinburgh Castle. The Thin Red Line was a military action by theSutherland Highlanders red-coated 93rd Regiment at the Battle of Balaclava on Oct. 24, 1854, during the Crimea War when the 93rd, aided by a small force of Royal Marines and some Turkish infantrymen, led by Sir Colin Campbell, routed aRussian cavalry charge at which point more Victoria Crosses were presented to the Highland soldiers than at any other time.
