Upon the verso of the front free endpaper, surrounding a spectacular sketch of a ''wild thing,'' Sendak inscribes: ''to Barbara Demaray / hi! and all good wishes to an old friend! Maurice Sendak''. He underlines his name. The story of Max sailing off to the land of the wild things was awarded the 1964 Caldecott Medal as the year's most distinguished picture book for children; dustjacket, with unclipped $4.95 price, shows the gold medal on the front cover.
