Very Rare U.S. Model 1826 Navy Belt-Hook Flintlock Pistol, by Simeon North, NVSN. .54 cal., 8.675" round barrel crisply marked "US/ET" and "P" in a sunken cartouche at breech, has brass blade front and dished-oval rear sights; beveled lockplate with rounded rear is crisply marked "U.S./S. North" under pan and "1828" to rear, has reinforced cock and separate brass pan without fence; steel furniture includes loop trigger guard with rear tang extending to round buttcap whose backstrap extends to barrel, serpentine sideplate, 4.125" left belt hook, single spring-retained band, captive swivel ramrod with button tip; 3/4-length stock of oil-finished walnut has raised panels at either side of lock and oval inspector's mark at left. Mfg'd ca. 1826-29, in just 3,000 qty. Condition is near fine retaining no original brown but being smooth gunmetal gray with sharp edges and details. Stock shows minor marks, remnant oval inspector's cartouche, a .5" crack from breech to top sideplate screw, a .75" chip out at right-front, and lovely grain, color and finish. Lock appears to be original flintlock with unbushed touchhole and original parts. Action is crisp, smoothbore is bright with a patch of erosion at right. This is an exceptional example of the last U.S. military pistol made by S. North and very rare, as most were altered to percussion. Est.: $2,000-$2,500. (Antique)
