Pre-Stamp Cover, Ship Letter, 1828, folded as cover, Madras to London, dispatched from MADRAS via ship “ZENOBIA” on 9 April 1828 to LONDON, addressed to “The Revd. W. Oxme | Secretary of the Mitionary (Missionary) Society | 26 Austin Friars | LONDON”, oval-shaped dispatch cancellation seal in black “MADRAS | SHIP LETTER | G.P.O. | 9 AP 9 | 1828”, London arrival rectangular marking chop in black of “INDIA LETTER | DOVER” and Magenta delivery cancellation round seal citing “C | 6 SE 6 | 1828”, Giles # Type SD 12, excellent condition, Very Rare.

Note:

i. Dover is a city and major ferry port located in Kent, South East England. It is located across the strait of Dover, the narrowest part of the English Channel, at 33 kilometers from Cap Gris Nez. 

ii. "ZENOBIA" was a merchant ship launched in 1815 in Calcutta, India. She traded with India under a license from the British East India Company. It was in 1852 that the P&O company purchased ZENOBIA for the purpose of using her as a coal hulk. In 1871, she was disbanded.

iii.  An interdenominational, evangelical missionary organization founded in England in 1795 by Welsh congregationalist minister Edward Williams, the London Missionary Society was an interdenominational, evangelical missionary organization. The organization is now part of the World Mission Council.
