This is an extremely rare and authentic, Printed Advertising Poster, using 9 colors with metallic gold, measuring 25” x 19.75” being from the famous Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. It is Not a reproduction. This version is known to collectors as “The White Eagle.” It has been professionally restored with some retouching, being offered and sold “as is” as such. Interested bidders may wish to phone for a firsthand condition report. This exceptional and ornate Poster was to be produced for the historic 1893 Colombian Exposition. It is listed in Jack Leonard's reference book on Buffalo Bill posters as number 50. As with many other “Buffalo Bill” Posters, the original artist still remains unknown to researchers and collectors.
“The White Eagle” was printed by A. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore, using 9 colors, including metallic gold. It features a beautiful and exciting illustrated scene showing a mounted Buffalo Bill with his rifle cradled in his arm, while scouting the trail ahead from atop a hill. A noble “White Eagle” is shown soaring above, over his shoulder. Buffalo Bill’s horse looks ahead while pawing its hoof. In the background a Westward wagon train is forming to move onward, apparently awaiting Buffalo Bill’s lead. The title at the top reads, “Rough Riders of the World” which indicates that this Poster was made late 1890’s, after Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders became famous in the Spanish American War of 1898, as team of “Rough Riders” was added to the show that year. The subtitle at the bottom reads: “The White Eagle ‘Col. W. F. Cody - Buffalo Bill’ Guiding And Guarding.”
Overall, this poster has excellent eye appeal and appears to be in excellent condition. There is some minor lightly scattered creasing and fine hairlines, besides the restorative painting. It has been professionally matted and nicely framed, currently ready for display. Other examples of this Buffalo Bill Poster have previously sold at auction for in excess of $20,000. We do not know of another “White Eagle” Poster being offered in recent history and it is certain to attract the attention of serious Buffalo Bill Poster collectors. An important piece of classic Americana.
