Very Fine U.S. Civil War Springfield Type I Model 1863 Rifle Musket with Bayonet and Museum Tag
This is a nice example of a Type I Model 1863 Springfield Rifle Musket with "1863" dated lock plate and barrel. The musket has "National Armory Bright" finish. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The musket has the distinctive hammer with beveled edges, bolster with no provision for clean-out screw, straight shank steel ramrod with tulip head, screw-fastened barrel bands and stock with no provision for band springs. The left flat is stamped with a clear "ELA" inspectors in initials in an oval. There is a brass plaque tacked to the right side at the heel that is marked "100", (from a museum, possibly Remington?). The barrel is fitted with a late pattern, two-leaf rear sight. The lock plate is stamped with the date "1863" behind the hammer and has the Eagle and Shield motif and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" stamped in front of the hammer. The Eagle and Shield motif is stamped on the side of the nipple bolster. "1863" is stamped on the top of the barrel and "V / P / eagle head" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left flat. The Model 1863 Rifle Musket combined features of the Model 1861 Rifle Musket and the Model 1861 Special Rifle Musket. This model was manufactured only by Springfield Armory in 1863; total production was about 273,265 pieces. Complete with a "US" marked socket bayonet and "J.E. CONDICT / NEW YORK" marked tan leather sling.

Very fine, possibly unissued. The barrel retains most of the original bright finish with some light spotting and discoloration. The remaining surfaces have a smooth gray patina. The stock is also very fine with a few small dents on the left side wrist and flat, a minor crack in the left flat extending from the upper screw and overall some minor dings and dents. The bayonet is very fine with a dull gray patina, a few small areas of minor pitting and some discoloration. The sling is very good.
