Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1887
This is a very fine example of a special order Winchester Model 1887 Lever Action Shotgun that manufactured in 1891. Designed by firearms genius John M. Browning, the Model 1887 was the first successful repeating shotgun. The shotgun has a special order round 32-inch 10 gauge barrel, distinctive two-piece forearm, massive lever action receiver, semi-pistol grip stock and checkered steel buttplate. The barrel and five-shot magazine have the Winchester commercial blue finish. The receiver, breechblock, lever and buttplate are casehardened. The black walnut stock and forearm are oil finished. The left side of the receiver is roll-engraved with the distinctive Winchester "WRA Co" monogram. The serial number "46971" is stamped on the underside of the receiver in front of the lever cut-out. The lower receiver tang is roll-stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./-NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.-/PAT. FEB. 16. & JUL. 20. 1886".
BBL: 32 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 10
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 46971
Condition:
Extremely fine. The shotgun is all original and retains more than 85% of the blue and 70% casehardened finish. Most of the blue finish on the barrel is intact with the exception of some minor thinning on the right side near the receiver and some very minor surface rust at the junction with the forearm. The finish on the underside of the receiver is thin and shows light handling wear. The receiver and breechblock retain more than 90% of the casehardened finish with vivid case colors. The sides of the lever have strong case colors; the contact points on the lever have a brown patina. The buttplate has a silver patina with some scattered age discoloration. The stock and forearm panels are in very good condition and retain nearly 90% of the original varnish finish with some minor handling marks. This is an exceptional and rare example of a Winchester Model 1887 Lever-Action Shotgun with special order extra length barrel.
