Very Fine Rock Island Arsenal Model 1903 Bolt Action Rifle

This U.S. Model 1903 Bolt Action rifle was manufactured by the Rock Island Arsenal in 1912. The rifle has the pre-WWI features which include low wood "S" grasping groove stock with single reinforcing bolt, handguard with rear sight relief cut and spring clips, fine checkered buttplate, grooved trigger small, concave rear sight elevation binding knob and large concave windage knob. "R.I.A./Ordnance Shell & Flame/11-12" marked barrel behind the rear sight. The steel lot code and proofmark "K5/P" are stamped on the underside of the barrel behind the rear sight collar. A large "S" is stamped on the stock forearm tip. The receiver is marked with the standard four line marking over the serial number. The steel lot code "C13" is stamped on the front of the bolt safety lug. The left side of the stock is stamped with a boxed "C.N./1912" cartouche. "S" followed by a circled script, "P" proofmark are stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard. The bayonet lug on the upper barrel band is correctly unmarked. Not stamped with the "H" mark used on Springfield Armory upper barrel bands. Casehardened receiver, bolt sleeve, cocking piece, safety and magazine cut-off. The "ON" face of the cut-off is polished bright and the remaining parts have the dull blue finish used on RIA rifles prior to WWI. The walnut stock and handguard are oil finished.

Extremely fine. The rifle is all original and retains 85% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish showing some flaking on the receiver and a blue-brown patina on the floor plate. The bolt retains most of the original blue finish with the usual cycling wear. The bright polish on the rear sight leaf has aged to a dark patina. The markings are crisp. The wood is excellent with minimal handling wear, and sharp grasping grooves and cut-off recess. The cartouche and the proofmark are extremely crisp. This is an exceptional example of an original Rock Island Arsenal Model 1903 rifle.
