Very Fine Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver
This is a very fine, attractive and totally original example of a Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver with nickel-plated finish and two-piece varnished walnut grips. Remington manufactured 25-30,000 Model 1875 Revolvers between 1875 and 1889. The top of the revolver barrel is marked: "REMINGTON & SONS. ILLION. N.Y. U.S.A." in a single line. The left side of the frame is stamped "44" in front of the cylinder indicating the revolver is chambered for the .44-40 cartridge. (Writer also verified this by insetting an inert 44-40 cartridge.) A batch number, "G/649" is stamped on the left side of the butt underneath the grip and "49" is written in pencil in the inside of both grips.
BBL: 7 1/2 Inch
Stock:
Gauge: 40-40
Finish: nickel
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 649
Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 90% of the untouched original nickel plated finish. There are patches of flaking with some pitting on the exposed metal surfaces on the left side of the barrel. The edges of the cylinder show finish wear and there is some significant surface rust along the edges of two cylinder flutes. Most of the finish has worn off the loading gate and there is some minor flaking on the backstrap. The grips are in excellent condition with nearly all of the original varnish and minimal handling wear. The barrel markings are sharp. The action is tight and functions well. This is a very good example of Remington's attempt to compete with the Colt Single Action Army Revolver.
