Very Fine Remington Model 1875/1888 Transition Single Action Army Revolver Serial Number 4

This is a very fine example of a rare Remington Model 1888 Single Action Army revolver. Also known as the New Model Pocket Army, it's estimated that Remington produced less than 1,000 of these revolvers circa 1888-89. Having assumed control of Remington Arms Company in 1888, it is likely that these revolvers were specifically made for Hartley & Graham with parts on hand at the factory. Identical in appearance to the Model 1890, the revolver has a 5 3/4 inch round barrel marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y. U.S.A." on top. The left grip panel is marked "44 W", which indicates that the caliber is 44-40 WCF. The extremely low serial number 4 is stamped on the left side of the frame under the grip panel and on the backs of both grip panels. Blue with casehardened loading gate and hammer. The revolver has a blade front and frame notch rear sights, lanyard stud and ring mounted on the butt and is fitted with smooth two-piece grips. This scarce, limited production Remington Model 1888 was a direct competitor to the Colt Single Action Army and is one of the most sought after Remington handguns.

Very fine. The revolver retains 90% original blue finish with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The hammer and loading gate retain 60% original case colors. The grips are excellent with a few areas of minor pressure dents and a few minor handling marks. Mechanically fine. A very fine example of a very scarce, antique Remington revolver.
