This is a very fine example of a Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Takedown Rifle with letter from the Cody Firearms Museum Records Office. The letter states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on May 26, 1906 and describes its as "Rifle". "Caliber 25/20", with octagon barrel and plain trigger. The letter states that this rifle had a takedown barrel. The rifle has a blued barrel, full-length magazine, forearm cap and receiver. The hammer, lever and solid crescent buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are straight grain walnut with a varnish finish. The full-octagon barrel has a dovetail mounted standard pattern front sight with nickel-sliver blade and adjustment screw on the right side of the base and a sporting style rear sight with serrated edges and screw adjustable sliding insert. A Lyman folding combination rear sight is mounted on the upper receiver tang. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.PATENTED OCTOBER 14. 1884." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The oval Winchester "WP" proof mark followed by "25-20" W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the take-down collar. The "WP" proof mark is stamped on top of the receiver, just behind the take-down collar. The serial number, "332292" is stamped on the underside of the receiver perpendicular to the axis of the bore. The tang markings are covered by the combination rear sight. Model 1892 Winchester Rifles with the special order takedown barrel are very rare.
BBL: 24 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 25-20
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 332292
Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 85% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine with wear limited to some minor scuff marks on the magazine tube below the barrel band. The forearm cap has most of the original blue finish intact. The receiver has some light handling wear on contact points on the top and underside, and the sides retain most of the original blue finish. The hammer, loading lever and buttplate have at least 90% of the casehardened finish. The case colors are strong on the hammer and sides of the lever. The case colors have faded slightly on the underside of the lever and buttplate. The barrel and frame markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are both in excellent condition with only light handling wear. The most significant wear is some shallow scuff marks on the right side of the stock and some handling wear in the finish on the underside of the forearm. This is a very fine example of a Winchester Model 1892 Sporting Rifle with scarce takedown barrel.
