Winchester Model 1873 Rifle with Cody Firearms Letter that states the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on March 6, 1900 (The receiver is pre-1898 and was shipped late thus still a desirable antique!). The letter describes the rifle as "Casehardened, 32 caliber", with "octagon" barrel, "plain trigger" and "checkered stock with pistol grip". The rifle has a blue full octagon barrel and full-length magazine. The receiver, hammer, lever, forearm cap and solid crescent buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The fancy grain highly figured walnut forearm and pistol grip stock have "Style H" checkered panels and a high polish "piano finish". The pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" in relief. The barrel is fitted with a dovetail mounted Lyman "Hunting" front sight with ivory insert and a folding adjustable leaf sight graduated to 800 yards and marked "1873". The receiver has the Third Model integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang mounted rear sight. The hammer is the final pattern with decorated upper border. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "WINCHESTER"S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A./KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "32 WC.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel just in front of the receiver. "32 CAL" is etched on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The serial number, "467805", is stamped in block letters on the lower tang behind the lever latch reading from left to right.

There is some minor age discoloration or age spotting on the right side plate and right rear of the receiver. The buttplate has 80% of the original case colors intact. 90% of the casehardened finish is present on the forearm cap. The fancy grain walnut stock and forearm are both in excellent condition. There are minor handling markings on the stock and forearm and there is a light scuff mark on the left side of the stock. The checkered panels on the stock and forearm are crisp. The markings on the barrel and receiver are sharp. This is a very fine example of a Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with very desirable casehardened receiver.
