Manufacturer: Savage Model: Navy
Navy Model Percussion revolver manufactured by the Savage Revolving Fire-Arms Co., of Middletown, Connecticut, c. 1863. The Ordnance Department purchased 11,984 of these distinctive revolvers during the Civil War. The revolver features a unique heart shaped trigger guard with round cocking lever, off-set hammer, six-shot cylinder, octagon barrel and hinged loading lever. The two-piece slab-sided walnut grips are oil-finished. The barrel, frame and cylinder have a highly polished blue finish. The loading lever, trigger guard, cocking piece and hammer are color casehardened. The top of the frame is roll-stamped "SAVAGE R.F.A. Co.MIDDLETOWN.CT./H.S. NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17 1856/ JANUARY 18 1859 MAY 15 1860" in four lines. An Ordnance inspection mark consisting of the script initials "MM" in an oval is stamped on the lower left side of the grip and "101" is painted on the bottom of the grip straps. Ordnance "W" and "H" sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. The revolver is not serial numbered.
BBL: 7 1/8 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: NSN
Condition:
Very fine. The revolver shows only storage wear and retains 75% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish. Most of the finish wear on the frame and barrel appears to be flaking, not from handling. There is no flash pitting on the cylinder, percussion nipples or hammer. The Savage markings on the top-strap and the single letter Ordnance inspection marks are crisp. The grips are excellent with a very sharp Ordnance inspection mark. This is a very fine example of an important Civil War revolver that is rarely encountered in un-issued condition.
