This is an exceptional example of a high quality Pattern 53 Rifle-Musket that was manufactured by London Armoury in 1862. This is a regulation pattern 1853 rifle-musket with finely blued barrel, casehardened lock, hammer and a smooth walnut stock. The left side of the barrel between the tang and rear sight is stamped with three proof marks (two crown/2, one crown/V) flanked by "L.A.C." The forend cap, trigger guard, and buttplate are brass. The lock plate is stamped with the Queen's "crown/V.R." which is usually only found on British Army P53 muskets with "1862 / L.A.Co." stamped ahead of the hammer. There is a nipple shield with a brass chain attached to the trigger guard sling swivel. The smooth stock has an oil finish with "J.SMILES" stamped behind the trigger guard, small "WH" stamped on the left stock flat, and the number "11" on the left side of the buttstock. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with a clear and crisp double roundel marking: "London ARMOURY CO. BERMONDSEY" in the outer circle and dated "1862" in the center. There are three barrel bands with a sling swivel attached to the front band which is marked "L.A.C." Complete with a swelled tipped iron ramrod.

The barrel bands retain 60% of the original high polished blue finish. The lock plate and hammer has 30% of the original case colors, otherwise a smooth gray patina. The buttplate, trigger guard, and forend cap have a smooth attractive aged patina. The stock is excellent with some minor dings and scratches. The stock markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
