The top of the receiver is marked "BURNSIDE PATENT/MODEL OF 1864", "CAST STEEL 188?" ahead of the rear sight. There is a "W", "I" and "H" inspection marks on various parts. The matching serial number is marked on the top of the breech block and frame. Pinched blade front sight and two leaf rear sight with graduations for 100, 300 and 500 yards. A cavalry sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. The barrel has a dull military blue finish, the breech block, lever and receiver tangs are niter blue, and the receiver, hammer, barrel band, lock plate and buttplate are casehardened.
