Manufactured 1863-1865. This Fifth Model carbine has the distinctive guide screw in the right side of the receiver . The top of the receiver is marked "BURNSIDE PATENT/MODEL OF 1864", "CAST STEEL 1864" ahead of the rear sight and the lock is marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO./PROVIDENCE=R.I." with a letter "M" at the rear. There are single letter sub-inspector marks on various parts. The matching serial number is marked on the top of the breech block and frame. Pinched blade front sight and two leaf rear sight with graduations for 100, 300 and 500 yards. A cavalry sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with two boxed cartouches on the left wrist and small inspection stamp on the comb just ahead of the buttplate tang and an "M" on the buttplate tang.

Very fine. The barrel retains 70% thinning original blue finish. The tangs, breech and lever retain 85% original niter blue finish showing some thinning to a brown with a number of minor handling marks and a patch of mild pitting on the lever. The receiver retains 40% case colors. The remaining metal surfaces retain 60% original case colors. The reoiled wood is very fine with a series of minor pressure marks on the underside of the forearm and some scattered minor handling marks overall. The cartouches are legible. Mechanically fine.
