Manufactured as Smith & Wesson's first production target revolver, the S&W Number 3 Targets were the premier 19th century target handgun which were originally designed for world famous target shooter, Ira Paine. The revolver has a blue finish with a casehardened hammer and trigger guard. The pistol is equipped with a square blade pinned front sight and a rear adjustable target sight mounted on the barrel catch. Matching serial numbers are stamped on the butt, rear cylinder face, barrel and catch. A pair of British proofs are stamped on the left side of the barrel and alternating British proofs are found on the cylinder flutes. The top of the barrel rib is stamped with the two line address/patent dates marking. Grips are checkered hard rubber with the S&W monogram at the top.

Condition:
Very fine. The revolver retains 95% original blue finish with loss at the muzzle, grip straps thinning to a gray and some scattered flaking turning to brown. The side plate on the left side of the frame shows a few slight scuffs where it meets the frame. The hammer and trigger guard retain 95% original case colors. The grips are excellent with overall crisp checkering. The hard rubber has aged to an attractive brown color. Mechanically excellent.
