You have the pleasure of bidding on a Very Early Example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle chambered in .38-56. The rifle features a 26" octagon barrel, buckhorn sights, full length magazine, walnut stock, and crescent butt stock. The chambering of this fine condition example is in one of the least produced and therefore rarest calibers to be found in the Model 1886, .38-56. This powerful cartridge is simply the standard .45-70 Government case that is necked down to accept a .38 caliber bullet. It was one of the higher velocity rounds of the day and found favor with hunters and sportsmen on both sides of the Mississippi River. Accompanying this rifle is a verification letter from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West which houses the original Winchester manufacturing records. This rifle has been located by serial number to verify that it was originally built by Winchester as an octagon rifle in .38-56 caliber and shipped from the Winchester warehouse on August 24, 1887. It is in fine condition overall showing no abuse or alterations. The standard 26” octagon barrel retains sharp and original Winchester markings as does the upper tang. Barrel and magazine tube show a lovely deep age patina as does the receiver. This rifle retains excellent screw heads and excellent wood with tight wood to metal fit. It also retains the original buckhorn rear sight with Winchester small blade front sight. Tight action and fine bore with deep rifling make this early 1886 extremely desirable. This was Winchester’s most powerful lever action rifle of the 1880s and found immediate favor with frontiersmen like Teddy Roosevelt. This rifle was manufactured in 1887. Antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. The serial number is 7762.
