Very Early Production DWM Model 1906 Portuguese Navy Contract Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol Serial Number 26

This is an example of an original unaltered Model 1906 Luger Portuguese Navy contract pistol. These early Lugers were attempts by the DWM factory to boost worldwide sales of Luger pistols. This model was manufactured specifically for the Portuguese Navy and only about 1,000 of this particular variation were ordered by Portugal with the highest recorded serial number being 769. This specific pistol was manufactured very early on in the production cycle as noted by the two digit serial number. The top of the chamber is marked with the early Portuguese Crown over the Navy Anchor crest and the top of the front toggle link is marked "DWM". Interestingly, a revolution took place in Portugal not long after these pistols were ordered and DWM was asked to change the chamber crest to an R.P. (Republica Portugesa) marking instead of the Crown marking of the monarchy. These models also differ somewhat from a standard contract Luger in that the lower safety area is polished with no markings, the extractor is marked "CARREGADA", it has a grip safety and no stock lug. The only proof marks are a "MP" proof, which stood for Marinha Portuguesa, on the left side of the barrel extension. The serial numbered parts are matching and the pistol is fitted with original checkered walnut grips. The magazine is the correct plated sheet steel version with a wooden base, marked "Cal. 9m/m" on the bottom.

Very good. The pistol retains 50% of the original blue finish with the small parts retaining traces of original straw finish, showing handling scratches and high edge wear, with an even blue/patina on the grip straps. The markings are crisp. The grips are very good showing some handling marks and bruises. Mechanically fine.
