Verrill, A. Hyatt. THEY FOUND GOLD. THE STORY OF SUCCESSFUL TREASURE HUNTS. The Rio Grande Press, Inc. 1972. 8vo. (14), xviii, (2), 267, (7) pages. Glorieta. Rio Grande Classics reprint of the 1936 first edition. original cream cloth, green and gold gilt. illustrated. map. mapped end papers. Fine. This book overviews 17 successful treasure hunts on both land and under the sea. Regarding sunken treasure, it includes the author's 2 trips to Silver Shoals seeking the 'Concepcion', dredging for the 'Golden Hind', the 'Santa Margarita', the steamship 'Merida' (which was supposed to be carrying Emperor Maximilian's wealth), the 'Hussar' (a Revolutionary War pay ship which sank in New York's East River), and the salvage of the liner, 'Laurentic'. Verrill wrote several books on treasure hunting, and they are important because they are well-researched and far more accurate than most. He didn't simply copy the work of previous treasure authors, or overly embellish the facts. Lot weight: 1 lbs 9oz. Subject(s): Treasure Hunting.
