Vernon Van Atta Greene - Original Comic Strip A
Vernon Van Atta Greene - Original Comic Strip Art for The Shadow Daily (The Ledger Syndicate, undated). "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" Those words chilled radio audiences in the 1930s, as they listened to the exploits of "the mysterious Shadow, weird fighter against crime, who possessed the ability to cloud men's minds so they could not see him." A smash in the pulps, a hit on the radio, the Shadow also had a brief run in the newspapers, starring in his own strip from 1938 through 1942. Vernon Greene, the strip's artist, got his start as a sports cartoonist. After delineating the adventures of The Shadow, he spent several years ghosting Polly and Her Pals, and eventually took over Bringing Up Father upon the death of George McManus, the strip's creator, in 1954. He continued bringing Maggie and Jiggs to life until his own death in 1965. The Shadow example offered here is particularly nice, featuring not only the Shadow and his best-known nemesis, the evil Shiwan Khan, but it even features a wickedly cool flying bathysphere, in all its 1930s glory. The benday shading is in excellent condition, and shows the light blue watercolor highlights beneath to nice effect. The strip has an image area of approximately 25" x 5.5" and is in excellent condition. It is signed by Greene in the third panel. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
