Fine tall Vernis Martin display cabinet/vitrine with serpentine front, mirrored back, gilt carved wood crown, three shelves (two glass and one red velvet), hand-painted and signed courting scenes of couple and landscapes, bombé (arched) glass, all surrounded by decorative bronzes. Old label underneath base reads in script hand-writing: "Vitrine N°7, Traverse."

Vernis Martin means Martin varnish and is named after the brothers Martin who, in 18th Century France, perfected the lacquer techniques from the Orient. Also known as "Parisian or Paris varnish". Vitrines where very much in vogue in 19th Century France during the rule of Napoleon III (1852-1870).
