Veraguas or Chiriquí Gold Pendant Shaman
Pendant: Male Shaman Holding Rattles
Veraguas or Chiriquí
A.D 700 - 1500
Tumbaga, Weight 110.1 grams
Height 4 ¼ in. Width 2 3/16 in.

Unusually ambitious and sculptural for a tumbaga casting, this quite naturalistic figure echoes the still-influential Quimbaya figural style of Colombia, even though it probably originated some centuries later than the high point of that group of gold pieces. The fully naked shaman with semi-seated posture is a further Quimbaya derivation. The figure holds large rattles, which probably once had pellets themselves, and has a banded collar. His trance-ridden expression combines with the headdress and double-spiral flaps at the sides of his head to indicate his being in the midst of a shamanic ritual event. There is some cracking at edges and slight scaling, both inherent with tumbaga.

The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.

Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
