Veraguas/Chiriquí Pendant:Bird with Human Arms
Pendant: Bird with Human Arms
Veraguas, Chiriquí
A.D. 700 - 1500
Tumbaga, Weight 67.6 grams
Height 3 3/8 in. Width 2 5/16 in.

Cast in high quality tumbaga rather than gold, this bell-shaped bird has a broad, hooked beak which touches the belly. Human arms rest against the upper belly, behind which small downward-curving hooks replace wings. Hooks similar to those by the body hang from the curving tips of the simple, three-part headdress. Prominent legs and three-toed bird feet project in front of the tail. Condition is fair: there are losses along the edges of headdress, "wing" hooks, and tail, and the proper left tip of the tail is missing, with further bending and cracking near the ends.

The lot is sold with a statement of authenticity from the distinguished expert Robert Sonin.

Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
