Veracruz Ceramic Standing Male Figure with Right
Standing Male Figure with his Right Hand to his Smiling Mouth
Veracruz
A.D. 300 - 700
Ceramic, traces of original paint
Height 20 in. Width 10 1/2 in.

The basically naked male figure stands with legs slightly spread, his left arm away from his side with forearm raised and hand held palm outward with fingers and thumb extended. He holds his right hand, to which a wristband attaches a short horn-like object, to the corner of his open mouth. His flattened head is trapezoidal, with the typical Veracruz turban-like head covering. Leaf-shaped tabs attached to his earlobes may represent some flexible material. His facial expression is bemused rather than broadly smiling. A bordered band binds his torso below a double-strand bead necklace with a simple, schematic central face pendant. The middle of the chest band shows intertwined, scrolling patterns at the center of which may be simplified, perhaps misunderstood components of a profile serpent head. His turban is centered with a symmetrical serpent-derived eye-cheek combination, flanked at either side just outside four ascending holes by profile serpent heads which face outward at an angle toward the upper headdress corners. Scrolls ripple along the top. The figure has been reassembled from several relatively large components, but with very little replacement. The entire surface has a consistent patination of root marks and mineral deposits, along with traces of original paint.

Provenance
Skinner, Boston: sale 2209, 20 September 2003, Lot 48, p.17
