Veracruz Ceramic Seated Female Figure
Seated Female Figure
Veracruz, central area
A.D. 300 - 700
Ceramic, burnished buff slip, natural bitumen paint
Height 14 in. Width 8 1/2 in.

This frontal female figure is seated cross-legged and wearing a skirt which is now partially broken away along its front hem. Her slightly arched hands, the fingers and fingernails of the right hand delineated with exceptional attentiveness, rest lightly on the knee and ankle of her left leg, which rests atop the right leg. Her large head is vibrantly rendered, with open eyes, the mouth slightly open as though producing a sound, and an overall portrait-like quality. Her banded headdress has a chin strap and side panels toward the rear, with prominent spool forms at either side of the forehead band. She wears medium-sized ear spools and a simple necklace band with one central, front bead. The pupils of her eyes are formed of attached, flattened balls that are accented with the black natural bitumen pigment characteristic of the region. Her face and upper body are covered with a rich, burnished cream slip, much of which remains.
A number of missing components have been given modern replacements: the proper right headdress spool; much of the proper left hand; toes and ball of the proper right foot; and proper right thumb. Reglued areas include some further patching, most in unimportant areas.

Provenance
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7477E, 8 December 2003, p.10, ill. p.10
