Seated Cross-legged Figure
Veracruz, central area
A.D. 300 - 700
Ceramic, traces of paint
Height 7 3/4 in. Width 6 in.

The seated, cross-legged figure has its hands resting on either knee. The head is bare, the eyes open with appliquéd pupils, and the open mouth shows filed teeth, leaving the two central ones in a somewhat-eroded T-shape. Elongated ears were punched to receive ear spools, and four medium-sized holes running from front to back on the center axis of the skull were probably intended for added head decoration or a headdress. There are simple armbands at the elbows, and a hastily-modeled larger band around the mid-chest, with a barely-suggested horizontally-oriented face at the front center. The waist is encircled by a band, to which a modern loin-cloth flap has been added at the front. The condition is otherwise good, with scattered surface mineral deposits and considerable original red paint on his face.

Provenance
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7477E, 8 December 2003, Lot 3018, p.11, ill. p.10
