Head of Eagle Warrior
Veracruz
A.D. 300 - 700
Ceramic, traces of red paint
Height 11 1/2 in. Width 9 1/4 in.

This life-sized head was once part of a full figure. The youthful face is vibrantly rendered with a candid expression and slightly parted lips. In addition to large circular ear spools, the figure wears an eagle warrior's helmet in which his face emerges from the bird's open beak. The raptor's eyes, beak, and feathers are all rendered in appliquéd relief.
Much of the ceramic sculpture from central Veracruz which has been found in archaeological contexts is in large groups, all of which were ritually broken as a part of their ceremonial use. Figures in these groupings cover a considerable range of sizes and gestural configurations. Thus far it has been difficult to assign specific types to roles within the ceremonial activities. The condition is very good, with some tips missing from the feathers of the eagle headdress.

Provenance
Splendors of the World, Haiku, Hawaii
