For your consideration is a Venetian Baroque rocking chair. The Baroque period of artistic style started around 1600 in Rome and Italy, which soon spread throughout Europe. The word baroque describes something that is elaborate and highly detailed. The Baroque style is characterized by exaggerated motion and clear detail used to produce drama, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance, and music. Baroque iconography was direct, obvious, and dramatic, intending to appeal above all to the senses and the emotions. This chair is intricately carved throughout the piece. The supporting beams feature many tradition Baroque elements. This Sleigh chair is a true testament to the craftsmanship of the era showcasing finely detailed cherubs on either arm rest. As well as a an extremely well done display of Eurasian cranes with their necks weaving throughout the frame and the front foot comes down into a ball and claw design. This piece is finished with a dark ebony stain and shows wear to areas of common use like the foot rail and arm rests as well as the underside of the chair. This piece was informally appraised $18,000. This Venetian Baroque sleigh chair is in wonderful shape for it's age and dates to circa 1790- as it is marked on the bottom of the runner. The chair measures 63 1/2" x 28 1/2" x 45 3/4".
