This painting is truly a unique find in our present day, as painting on velvet was an extremely popular medium roughly 30 years ago, during the 1970s. In Black Velvet Artist, a booklet written by Pamela Liflander in 2003, the history of this distinctive art form is expounded upon. ?The birthplace of black velvet paintings can be traced to ancient Kashmir, which is considered to be the fabric's original homeland. These paintings were religious in nature, portraying the iconic artwork of the Caucasus region by Russian Orthodox priests." She further wrote that Marco Polo and others introduced the West to this art form, and that some of these early works still hang in the Vatican. Of course, her book wouldn?t have been complete without mentioning Edgar Leeteg (1904?1953), "the father of American black velvet kitsch,? for which he became quite famous.
?Velvet Still Life? is an original oil painting of a collection of objects on a velvet surface, just as the title suggests. The variety of items on the table ranges from fruits and vegetables to candles and cloth. This wide assortment creates a visual interest that allows the viewer?s eye to roam the painting, exploring its depths and secrets. While some may see these objects as being randomly placed, the composition has a nice configuration to it that flows across the surface.
