Vellum Medical Diploma Philadelphia Alms House
Vellum Medical Diploma, Physicians and Surgeons of the Philadelphia Alms House, 1822. This is an impressive vellum medical diploma issued by the managers, physicians and surgeons of the Philadelphia Alms House. The document was awarded to Alban G. Smith (1788?-1865?) of Kentucky, one of America's pioneer surgeons. As an apprentice Smith was present at the first-ever removal of an ovarian tumor in 1809. In search of a formal education, he went to Philadelphia where he was a student of medicine at the Philadelphia Alms House for 12 months. On March 21, 1822 Smith was awarded this diploma. A year later, Dr. Smith successfully performed an ovariotomy thus becoming the third surgeon in America to perform such a procedure. The diploma has an engraving of the Philadelphia Alms House that operated until 1830. It has some soiling, folding and is slightly faded toward the bottom, but it remains an attractive document. The document measures 17.5" x 22.5".

Shipping: Flat Material, Large (view shipping information)
