Vaughn Bode - Original Art for Bode's Cartoon Carnival #24 (No Publisher, 1975). As much a cultural phenomenon as a comic strip artist, Vaughn Bode (self-proclaimed "cartoon guru") introduced us to a fantasy world teeming with sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll. His unique, off-beat, and yet oddly comfortable style inspired millions of developing artists, including Ralph Bakshi (whose cult classic Wizards owes more than a little to Bode's influence) and millions of graffiti artists worldwide. An enigmatic creator, Bode developed the character of Cheech Wizard as early as 1957, bringing him to an appreciative public in his college paper a decade later. Bode's star quickly rose in both popular and critical circles, as he was published in various fanzines and underground publications. He won the Hugo Award in 1969 for Best Fanzine Art, and the "Yellow Kid" Award at the 1974 International Comics Congress in Lucca, Italy. Tragically, Bode died at the age of 34 in 1975, leaving behind a body of work that is still read and appreciated by fans worldwide. Offered here is a fabulous late example of his work from his "Cartoon Concert", where Bode would show the images through slide projection, while narrating the story and bringing his characters to life. Done shortly before Bode's untimely death, this amazing piece shows the artist at the height of his creative powers. Measuring approximately 13.5" x 16.5", with an image area of approximately 9.25" x 10.5", the piece is in excellent condition, with a vellum overlay upon which editorial notations have been made. Bode's work is rarely offered for sale, making this a unique opportunity to acquire a piece from a true American master.
