Vases. Paestan red-figure bell-krater attributed to Asteas painter. Circa 360-350 BC. D/ The obverse with phlyax scene. The reverse with two conversing youths, both drapped with himatia. Band of wave below the scenes, laurel wreath below the rim. 34.5 cm high. The phlyax scene on the obverse is possibly related to the myth of Erigone. Erigone, guided by her dog Maera, found the grave of her father Icarius, killed by his shepherds who became intoxicated by the wine, and hanged herself on a tree. Dionysos became angry and sent a plague on the land, and all the maidens of Athens, in a fit of madness, hanged themselves. The swinging of the beam reminds us the rytual swinging of seesaw of the festival called Aiora, during Antesterie (the athenian celebrations in honor of Dionysos), when the Athenian virgins swung from trees, symbolizing the oscillating from life to death of Erigone.
