Various Properties Dan Johnson "Gazelle" chair, ca. 1958 manufactured by Dan Johnson Studio, Rome, Italy, retailed by Arch Industries, Los Angeles cast aluminum, later black paint 313/8 in. (79.7 cm) estimate: - $4,000-6,000 Literature Derek Ostergard, Mackintosh to Mollino: Fifty Years of Chair Design, New York, 1984, pp. 64-65 Dan Johnson's sculptural chair designs reflect the unusual provenance in their manufacturing history. A Californian who had his "Gazelle Line" of chairs made by hand in Italy, Johnson was inspired by both the organic designs of Mollino and Graffi and the American craft movement. The "Gazelle Line" was also available in walnut and bronze, both of which incorporated caning for the seats. The aluminum model is unusual in that the entire chair is cast from aluminum, not just the frame, and thus the model was probably intended for outdoor use.
