Wife of Jefferson Davis and First Lady of the Confederacy. ALS signed “Varina Jefferson Davis,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 6, May 6, 1896. Letter to Charles Aldrich at the Historical Department of Iowa. In part: “I am delighted to hear from you again and know that you are well, and remembered my husband with such great appreciation. Your notice of him in the Black Hawk war is peculiarly appropriate just now when a *** has denied, through McClure’s magazine, that Mr. Davis served through that war. She brought a whole beehive of indignant people about the ears however, and when I wrote to ask her why she denied to people a statement she said he was not mentioned in the records, but she would try to find the truth about ‘this scrimmage.’ I did not answer her flippant note.” The original mailing envelope panel has been affixed to the bottom of the last page. Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a tear to top edge, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
