ALS signed “V. Jefferson Davis,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4 x 6, July 13, 1898. Written from the Rockingham Hotel in Narragansett, Rhode Island, a letter to Captain Edmund Zalinski, in part: "My daughter's novel comes out on the 15th inst. I have heard so I write at her request to ask if you can get it reviewed for her. I suppose the Harpers will send a copy at your request to any one you indicate, and Winnie is afraid it may be a failure and says she will want all the help her friends can give her. I do not agree with her, but you know how apprehensive young people are when their hearts are set on anything." Davis adds a postscript and signs with her initials: "How does your mortar battery come on? I believe it would be a most valuable thing just now. Yours, VJD." In fine condition, with three horizontal folds. Zalinski served at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as professor of military science. His name became widely known in connection with the invention and development of items of military technology, particularly the pneumatic dynamite torpedo-gun.
