Variation of Model 1847 U.S. Sapper's Musketoon, by Springfield Armory, lock dated 1853, NSNV, .69 cal. smoothbore, 26'' barrel, iron fittings, walnut stock, with early U.S. leather sling as distinguished from later slings by its flat stock brass hook. Right side of barrel at muzzle shows Sapper's Musketoon unique bayonet attachment device; forward barrel band is of the more common type lacking the bayonet lug. Lockplate dated 1853 may have been used for the 80 pieces mfg'd in 1855. ''VP'' eaglehead proof to barrel. According to author/historian Lee Rutledge, who is in possession of the 1853 & 1856 U.S. Ordnance reports from Texas, the musketoons were very unpopular with troops and officers, as not only did they kick like a mule, but they suffered different types of breakage, which explains why they are so often found with non-standard and somewhat later parts and hardware. Condition is very good showing light general pitting to barrel, a little bit more moderate nea!
r nipple bolster. Nipple appears to be an old replacement. Stock shows scuffs, scratches, darkening near metal surfaces, and very minor separations near apex of lockplate. Sling shows nice even toning and remains supple. Ramrod is present. Est.: $2,500-$3,500.
