The Vanderbilt family rose to prominence in the 19th century through the efforts of Cornelius "Commodore" Vanderbilt, who built a vast fortune in shipping and railroad industries, becoming one of America's wealthiest individuals. Their wealth and influence expanded through the construction of major railroads, including the New York Central, and through lavish displays of Gilded Age opulence, such as grand mansions in New York and Newport. By the end of the century, the Vanderbilts were a symbol of both immense industrial success and the excesses of America's emerging aristocratic elite.
