Van Halen1977 Whisky-a-Go-Go Los Angeles Concert Poster. An original Sunset Strip concert poster from late 1977, only a short time before the world got to know about the legendary band Van Halen. The multi-night stand happened in December of '77, commencing just a couple of months before from the release of their groundbreaking self-titled debut album. This four-date run was promoted by the infamous Kim Fowley, who had also formed, produced, and managed the Runaways, whose New Year's Eve show at the venue is also listed on this poster.

A truly great poster that features a terrific action shot of the young band, is somewhat bigger than most posters of this ilk, is in perfect condition, and is quite scarce. For six months in 2019, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York City and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame co-organized an exhibit at The Met called Play It Loud: Instruments of Rock Roll. Among super-rare concert posters on display by the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, was... another specimen of this Van Halen poster. It's that respected and coveted.

Playing in Los Angeles' hallowed club The Whisky, this is a monumental poster for the Van Halen brothers, David Lee Roth and Michael Anthony. Think of this as from the dawn of the 1980's hair-metal scene, growing out of the arena rock of the 70's and into something new.

In the years before Van Halen played clubs and had a recording contract, they were seen as a band that was too loud and outrageous. Forming in Pasadena in the early 1970s, skeptics thought David Lee Roth could not sing a lick and Eddie needed to turn his guitar amp down. But that didn't matter to the hundreds of people they played for in backyards in their area. They became such a draw that clubs had to give in and let them play. And the rest, of course, is history.

Measures 17 ½" x 22 ½" and grades to Mint condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
