Burlington, Vermont, Bank of Burlington, 18xx (1830s-40s), $20, Plate A, VT-45-G44, Proof banknote, black on India paper, Seated allegorical woman with sword and lion with steamboat in background, left with sheaves of wheat, Native American in canoe on bottom, POC's, PMG graded Choice About Uncirculated 58 condition. Durand, Perkins & Co., New York imprint. Found only in proof. Other than this example, one other was offered at auction in 2020 at Heritage. The Silver City Collection was discovered in 2010 in the basement of an old bank building. The 200+ notes, almost all different, were all proofs by RWH & predecessor companies dating between 1810 and 1843 with none later. Evidently it was a forgotten archives of RW&H, Boston that was overlooked and abandoned. These 200+ notes were the only survivors out of close to 5000 notes or more that were found since the balance were dumped by workers at the bank. Please see our previous 2011 Silver City - Round Mountain auction to view the amazing and mostly unknown Obsolete notes that were part of this find. (ex-Silver City Collection).
