VOYAGES AND DISCOVERIES OF THE COMPANIONS OF COLUMBUS, BY WASHINGTON IRVING

First edition, Carey and Lea, Philadelphia, 1831. This copy includes a two-page ad for the Historical Encyclopedia bound in at the back. Front pastedown with old inked inscription, "Friends Social Library No. 3" and the bookplate of Gustavus Wynne Cook. 8vo. BAL 10133; Sabin 35205. The first American printing of the companion to Irving`s book "The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus". This vivid, engrossing account of the exploits of the conquistadors depicts "the spirit of Spanish chivalry" in all its romantic glory without neglecting the horror of the crimes committed in its name: Alonzo de Ojeda, Amerigo Vespucci, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, and Juan Ponce de Leon feature prominently. Original cover lacking; old boards worn and rubbed, original paper title from spine re-glued to replaced paper spine, foxing throughout.
