VON RICHTHOFEN’S PERSONAL SILK SCARF WORN AT THE
VON RICHTHOFEN’S PERSONAL SILK SCARF WORN AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH. Perhaps the most glamorous of all war trophies from Richthofen is this long silk scarf. This tan silk scarf was taken from the Baron’s body immediately following the tri-plane’s crash. In his duties as Brigade Intelligence Officer, Lt. Donald L. Fraser reviewed all personal items removed from the crash site. He retained this scarf and von Richthofen’s handkerchief until the early 1960s when he presented them to collector, Charles Donald, who later placed them into the Carisella collection. Photographic evidence shows the Baron wearing this very scarf. The scarf, supported by a typewritten and signed affidavit from Fraser and a letter from Donald expressing interest in re-purchasing the items (scarf and handkerchief), is a tremendously important Richthofen personal relic. Two pictures of Richthofen wearing the scarf appear in Peter Kilduff’s book The Illustrated Red Baron, The Life and Times of Manfred von Richthofen, Cassell & Co., London 1999, one on page 22, the other on page 133. CONDITION: Fragile, but good overall for its age. Fringe is mostly missing, although evidence of its existence appears on both ends. Four possible blood stains are evident at one end. SIZE: 61” x 12-1/4”. From the Collection of the late P. J. Carisella. 4-53522 (40,000-60,000)
