VON RICHTHOFEN’S GOGGLES
VON RICHTHOFEN’S GOGGLES. These goggles were originally found near the crash site, after falling out of Richthofen’s air plane, by E. E. Hardaker, a Lewis Gunner in the 31 Battalion, 8th Brigade, 5th Division, Australian Imperial Forces, and were sent by him to Carisella in 1964. The face piece is brown leather, backed by light brown velour-type material, and bound by cloth tape and imitation fur. The lenses are of two-pc laminated glass construction mounted in metal frames, which are attached to the face piece by wire spring devices and light cloth. There are no apparent markings on the lenses, or any other section of the goggles. The attaching strap, or headband, is not present; one lens has delaminated, but the broken pieces are present. A photograph of von Richthofen wearing these very goggles (or a similar pair) is included, in addition to three items of correspondence from Hardaker regarding the transfer of ownership from him to Carisella. A photograph of the goggles appears on page 139 of Who Killed The Red Baron? Included also is a photographic print of this picture. CONDITION: Goggles are in relic condition and very fragile. From the Collection of the late P. J. Carisella. 4-53516 CW17 (30,000-35,000)
