VOLTA, ALESSSANDRO
(1745 - 1827) Pioneering Italian physicist made a Count by Napoleon in 1810 for his work in the field of electricity. The electrical unit known as a volt was named so in his honor. Very rare A.L.S. "Alessandro Volta" 1p. 4to., Milan, May 29, 1812, in Italian to a Marquis. In part: "…The enclosed letter is from my brother in law from Como in which he recommends me, and I in turn recommend to you, to assist the widow Ambrogi in what she needs. She came personally to Milan to persuade me to look after her, and was also thinking of coming to see you in Pavia. However, since our first meeting, during which she shed many tears, I have not seen her again. Perhaps she has already come to see you or other people here. At any rate, I would like to pass on my recommendation to others for this poor widow, who is a good person, being discreet as well as polite, and also to her daughter, whom I believe to be of the same quality. I take this occasion to confirm all my sentiments for a great friend…". Very boldly written in Volta's elegant hand, and a fine, extremely scarce example.
