Containing the present natural and political state of those countries, their productions, arts, manufactures, and commerce ; with observations on the manners, customs, and government of the Turks and Arabs. Translated from the French. In two volumes. Dublin : Printed for Messrs. White, Byrne, W. Porter, Moore, Dornin, and Wm. Jones, 1793SECOND IRISH EDITION, pp xvi, 557, (17), with half-title, 2 parts (the second with drop-title) in 1 volume, with continuous signatures and pagination, 8vo, original boards, uncut: wanting front blank flyleaf, spine heavily worn, wanting most of backstrip, joints cracked, upper board nearly off, internally fresh and still a very good copy in near 'as issued' state. No illustrations were included in this edition, which ESTC comments was "not a reissue of the Dublin 1788 edition". "Volney set out for the Levant at the end of 1782. He spent three years travelling through Syria and Egypt, mostly on foot. He travelled with Cassas in Syria in 1785. This important work constitutes the [sic] one of the best exposes of Ottoman Egypt.
