A truly international artist, Carreno was born in Cuba. He moved to Spain in 1931, where he was able to support himself as a graphic artist.
In 1935 he moved to Mexico, where he took up with some of the great muralists living there, including Diego Riviera. From 1937-1939 he lived and painted in Paris. He spent the next ten
years living in New York City. In 1957, after a brief return to Cuba where he taught art, he moved to Chile, where he received the National Arts Award in 1982.Although Pan American day had its origins in 1890, with the establishment of the OAS (Organization of American States), it wasn?t until 1931 that the event obtained its present name.
