VIKTOR LUTZE
VIKTOR LUTZE
(1890 - 1943) Gauleiter of the Ruhr and an early Hitler associate, Chief of Staff of the SA following Rohm's death until his own end in an automobile accident. T.L.S. in green indelible pencil on his official S.A. letterhead, 1p. large 4to., Berlin, July 10, 1940 concerning the desire of S.A. Brigadefuhrer RICHARD SCHALLER to transfer to the SS. Lutze tries to dissuade the man from making the change: "...I don't see a reason for transfer to the SS... I don't see your opinion against the S.A. but I never held anyone back who wanted to leave... The S.A. man was always an idealist and always carried the biggest fight without having to depend on a uniform..." Schaller was an influential individual: he served as mayor of Cologne and held a number of high-level administrative positions. As requested, he would join the SS and obtain the rank of SS-Untersturmfuhrer, serving in SS Panzer Reg. 3 "Russland".
