Utilizing worn Pantone color sample chips, Vik Muniz collaged and photographed replications of famous works of art, creating a series known as PICTURES OF COLOR. Here Muniz continued the “subtle play between direct and physical reconnaissance and photographic reconnaissance, which alludes to reality” (Germano Celant, n.p.) that he utilized in previous bodies of work. With the aid of the computer to deconstruct these images into squares of color, Muniz reconstructed his own versions using the Pantone color samples, which he glued in place and photographed. When standing near these oversized photographs, the individual chips become enormous pixels and are dizzying and incomprehensible. When one stands back the eye is able to absorb what the artist has accomplished. The chips take on the appearance of individual brushstrokes, mosaic tiles or a pointillist technique. Muniz forces his viewer to question the process of seeing versus perceiving. These six photographs were included in the Brazil Pavilion in the Giardini del Castello at the 2001 49th Venice Biennale. Curated by Germano Celant and including the work of Ernesto Neto, this exhibition celebrated contemporary Brazilian art as a language to convey the complexities of a nation made up of different cultures, ethnicities, faiths and rituals.
