VICTORIA
(1819 - 1901) Queen of England, reigned during the Crimean and Boer Wars, abolished the East India Company, brought Disraeli to power as Prime Minister, and is considered the symbol of a unified British Empire. Manuscript L.S. on black-bordered letterhead, 2pp. legal folio, Court at Osborne, Apr. 28, 1871, to the President of Peru, Oscar Benavides. Victoria sends greetings and the sad news that: "...Our dearly Beloved Daughter-in-law, Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales [Queen Alexandra] ...gave birth on the 6th of this month to a Prince, who, after having received his Holy Baptism the names of Alexander John Charles Albert, died on the following day...". Boldly signed at conclusion, mounted, very good. Born prematurely, Alexander was Edward VII and Queen Alexandra's last child.
