Victorian large silver plate serving piece for fish, pate, cake or pie. Made in England, 19th century and signed by both James Dixon and Sons, Sheffield and James Deacon and SOns, Sheffield.
Seymour Wyler called Dixon an outstanding producer of electroplated wares (page 35 in his book on Sheffield and electro plate).
Measures 15 1/2inches from end to end.
Rounded rectangular shaped lifter with raised side to prevent food from falling off. The surface is beautifully engraved with a forest scene of birds amongst trees and flowers. Very fine detail. Triangular join of handle with arched neck leading to a repousse silver terminal with moulded foliage. The main part of the handle is moulded like a horn (or natural horn?) to give a good grip as well as increase the aesthetic appeal. The other terminal is similarly modelled. The back of the server has engraved hallmarksJD&S (James Dixon and Sons). EP over GS and a lamp, the mark for James Deacon and Sons..
Condition is very good.
